ORIGIN & MANUFACTURING MODE
- The land of Sommières owes its name to the town of Sommières, in Occitanie, where it was discovered in the 19th century. However, another version of History says that it was extracted in a neighboring village, in Salinelles. It is a smectic clay of the montmorillonite type. It was formerly used for textile fulling, the action of degreasing the wool from sheep's fleeces, fatty by nature (hence its other name "fuller's earth"). Today, Sommières earth is mainly produced in Morocco, where it is often called “Fez soap”.
