What's in commercial lipsticks?

Lipstick is an essential part of any make-up routine. Whether it's to emphasize your smile, add a touch of elegance to your look or simply enhance your lips, it's hard to go without.

Every year, 900 million lipsticks are sold worldwideand in the course of a lifetime, a person can ingest up to 2 kg ! It's a sobering thought: what do we really put on our lips every day?

Generally, the composition of an industrial lipstick includes :

  • Waxes for consistency: they can be of animal (beeswax), vegetable (candelilla wax) or synthetic (petrochemical) origin.

  • Oils and silicones to add shine and facilitate application. However, many mineral oils are derived from petroleum, and silicones are not very biodegradable.

  • Vegetable butters for creaminess, but often combined with synthetic components.

  • Pigments such as titanium dioxide (TiO2), widely used in cosmetics but now controversial due to its potential carcinogenic potential.

  • Food-grade to flavor the product.

  • Antioxidants such as vitamin C (tocopherol) or synthetic preservatives (BHA, BHT), sometimes suspected of having harmful effects on health.

The conclusion? The composition of commercial lipsticks isn't always as clean as we'd like. That's why we've decided to offer you a natural, safe alternative.
